How do we choose where to focus on?

We all have our list of things we have to do - maybe you write it down, maybe you don’t.

These are things we really do HAVE to do (most of us) - go to work, feed self and family, sleep, connect with others, look after pets, shop for food, wash clothes, shower, water plants… You get the drift.

Then, there is everything else. The stuff that we need to do - clean house, fix the light, do a tip run, pair socks, throw away old pants, stick some stuff on Vinted, post birthday cards - we can live without these things being done, BUT we do them because it makes us feel good and it’s moving the needle forward in our lives.

THEN - we have the things we do for pleasure. The stuff that lights us up a little - take that class, organise a friends meet up, watch that film at the cinema, take the spa day.

But, we only have limited time in a day. So, how do we choose what to do and what not to do?

And… (I guess here is my real question) - Do we make an intentional choice on what we do and when we do it, or do we just do the things in a mini chaotic way?

When I send my Saturday emails I always ask - how are you, what do you need today? Simply because the way so many of us live, in a state of mini chaos - we don’t check in with ourselves. Let me explain - I live in a state of mini chaos sometimes too, I get it. I try and do too much and end up feeling like I have done nothing that makes me smile.

How do I fix this? I can tell you scrolling through Instagram reading 100’s of quotes that feel nice to read/hear but actually mean very little in the day to day living doesn’t work.
“Rise above the toxic noise… remember who you were before they told who you to be…Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today…”
It’s a LOVELY distraction, and watching people living their best Insta lives is great - but how does this transfer to your every day life? I just don’t think it does.

How do you choose on what to focus on? Give yourself 5 minutes every day to sit in silence. Ideally in the middle of a room, with no phone, no distractions and nothing but your thoughts and mind.

Call it meditation, call it speaking to your God, call it reflection time. It’s name really isn’t important - what is important is the INTENTION of carving out a small space in your day to ground yourself and check in with what you need, and then what needs to be done.

No magic spell, no mystical ideas. Just give yourself 5 minutes of your day to intentionally check in with yourself and figure out what you need and want to focus on.

Until next time, L xx
