How to navigate the news.
There is an atmosphere of anxiety in the air - and it’s no wonder why. We’ve just started dealing with anxiety over the pandemic, and then the war begins in Ukraine. It’s terrifying, the news is awful and so many people are struggling with a very real fear.
How can we manage and cope with these feelings? Especially anxiety.
I’m here to help.
People are having their lives torn apart and we’re watching it on the news and on social media - we’re gripped. It’s taking over our lives - so what can we do to help ease the feelings?
Don’t go in search of articles or news to support your worst fears.
You may type questions into a search engine and be met with harrowing photos and dramatic news stories. try and avoid going down those rabbit holes - try and remind yourself you and in the here and now. Practice mindfulness if you can, be present with yourself and be mindful of looking for the evidence.Set boundaries.
Take breaks from media (even social media) and stick to them. Ask friends to be mindful of sharing information with you about it too. You’re allowed to set boundaries for your mental health.Accept the anxiety.
Tell yourself “I feel anxious right now, and that’s okay. It will pass.” Rather than fighting the feeling - which will be a struggle.Spend time with people you love, in places you love.
Take a walk in the woods with friends who make you laugh. Watch a film with your favourite family member. You’re allowed to do these things - you may feel guilty, but you have to put your mental health as a priority.BREATHE.
Take space for yourself and breathe as gently as you can. We often hold ourselves tightly when we are anxious - breathing can help release that.Distract yourself with the normal.
The washing, laundry, ironing - all those banal tasks can offer a distraction. They are low stress and high repetition errands that can help.
However you manage - you can always turn to someone to help - a professional if need be. My 121 Emotional Support Session details are <<HERE>>.
Take care of yourself, sending love.
