Three things I do to start my working shift.
In order to do the work I do, I need to be grounded, balanced, and overall pretty stable.
Why?
Because I work supporting people with their emotions, I have to have boundaries, be the calm one, and be the stable one.
Obviously, I am not always calm and stable, if you know me IRL you’ll know I’m human - I make mistakes, I fail, I have wobbles, I get anxiety, I over think - I am human. So, what do I do at the start of my working sessions to help me feel grounded?
1) I light a candle.
That’s right, the cliche is there, alive and well! I love the smell the light it gives, and to use the fire as a little focus point for my #2 -
2) I meditate.
And by this I mean I sit, for 5 minutes (sometimes more) in total silence, with my phone far away from me. I sit and I breathe. And I allow my mind to think, and to settle. I don’t force it to settle, it just does, naturally. I breathe into the space, I let my body rest, and my mind rest. And I sit.
3) I write it all out.
I spend around 5 minutes brain dumping what I am thinking. Sometimes this feels profound and important, other things it’s what I want to eat for lunch and what I want to watch on TV. But I make sure that my thoughts are no longer in my mind, but out into the world, on paper (or a document on my laptop).
There are other things I do sometimes too - go for a walk, or dance it out. Or sometimes even have some tea and toast in front of the TV. But those three things really help contribute to feeling grounded - so I can be there for my clients.
Of course, before I see a client I re-read my notes about our sessions, I prepare with some information gathering from the Internet if I need to, and I make sure I am on time!
I would love to hear some things YOU do to ground yourself.
